The Government of India has revised MSME classification thresholds effective April 1, 2025. Understanding these criteria helps businesses access significant benefits under various government schemes.

Revised MSME Classification (Effective April 1, 2025)

CategoryInvestment in Plant and Machinery/EquipmentAnnual Turnover
MicroUp to ₹2.5 croreUp to ₹10 crore
SmallUp to ₹25 croreUp to ₹100 crore
MediumUp to ₹125 croreUp to ₹500 crore

Both investment and turnover criteria must be met. The classification is based on whichever is lower.

What is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the government's online system for registering MSMEs. It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system.

Key features include completely online and free registration based on self-declaration, requiring only Aadhaar and PAN. A permanent registration number (URN) is issued instantly, and the system auto-links to GST and Income Tax data.

How to Register

Visit udyamregistration.gov.in and enter Aadhaar number with OTP verification. Enter PAN for verification, which auto-fetches GST and IT data. Fill enterprise details including type, activities, employees, investment, and turnover. Submit declaration and receive Udyam Registration Number (URN) and certificate via email.

Benefits of Udyam Registration

Financial benefits include priority sector lending from banks at lower interest rates, Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for collateral-free loans up to ₹10 crore (enhanced from ₹5 crore in Budget 2025), protection against delayed payments (interest at 3× bank rate), and 50% subsidy on patent registration fees.

Operational benefits include preference in government tenders, concession in electricity bills (state-specific), reimbursement of ISO certification expenses, and easier access to credit through various government schemes.

Important Points

Any type of enterprise can register: Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Private Limited, OPC, HUF, or Cooperative Society. One enterprise can have only one Udyam Registration, though multiple units can be added under the same registration. Export turnover is excluded while calculating turnover threshold.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not updating registration when crossing thresholds, forgetting to migrate from old UAM registration, providing incorrect investment figures, and not linking bank account for scheme benefits are frequent errors.
