Annual Budgeting Is Not Enough. Use Rolling Forecasts
Annual budgets matter, but businesses are managed through rolling forecasts, not static files prepared once and forgotten.
On this page
An annual budget is useful. Treating it like a fixed truth for the whole year is not.
Markets change. Collections shift. Hiring plans move. Costs surprise you. A static budget becomes stale quickly.
What management really needs
A rolling forecast. Something that updates assumptions as reality changes.
Difference between budget and forecast
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
| budget | annual target and resource plan |
| forecast | current best estimate of where you are heading |
What to do next
Keep the annual budget. But update forecast monthly or at least quarterly for:
- revenue
- gross margin
- collections
- major costs
- cash need
This gives management a live steering tool instead of a historical commitment sheet.
